Dentures are one of the most popular and reliable ways to replace missing teeth. These prosthetics return the benefits of having a complete smile, including self-confidence and the everyday necessary functions of eating and speaking with ease.  But can you wear them all day, including throughout the night? Read on to learn the answer and the best recommendations for removal.

Can You Wear Your Dentures All Day?

In short, the answer is no. Even though it’s incredibly helpful to have a functional, complete set of teeth to wear, it’s not best for your oral health or your denture to wear it all the time. When you leave your restoration in for too long, the underside can begin to accumulate food particles, debris, and harmful bacteria. This can lead to an increased risk of oral health issues, including gingivitis, halitosis (bad breath), and even respiratory infections. Additionally, your mouth can become extremely irritated, possibly forming sores or an infection.

Since your denture places pressure throughout your gums and jawbone, it’s best to give your mouth a daily break from them. This will allow your oral tissues to rest and keep them protected from excessive wear and tear of your prosthetic.

The Best Times to Remove Your Dentures

Removing your dentures will not only help keep your oral health in top condition but bring relief to your mouth so it’s best to take them out at least once a day. Here are the best times to remove your dentures:

  • When you’re cleaning them: This not only refreshes your mouth but allows you to clean the entire surface of your dentures. By brushing them (and your entire mouth), you will keep them in their best condition. It’s best to do it at least twice a day or after every meal.
  • Before going to sleep: Taking your dentures out before going to bed will give your gum and bone tissues a chance to rest and receive essential nutrients to keep them healthy. It will also help to avoid swelling and bacteria. Soak your restoration overnight in a cleansing solution to remove any hidden particles.

Even though you will enjoy a complete smile for most of the day, it’s best to give your smile a break at night. With these helpful tips, you are sure to keep your oral health and your dentures in top condition!
