Information?
Do you have a severely damaged tooth, or did you recently receive a root canal? If so, then you’re most likely going to need a dental crown. With this effective procedure, you’ll be on your way to enjoying your fully restored smile again! But what should you expect during your after-care process? Read on to learn four things to know following your dental crown treatment.
#1: Expect Numbness After Procedure
To ensure that you are both safe and comfortable throughout your procedure, your dentist will likely use local anesthesia (and sedation therapy if you’re feeling anxious). This means you should expect numbness for a few hours after your treatment. While this can prevent you from feeling any discomfort, the lack of sensation can make you more susceptible to accidentally burning or biting yourself when eating or drinking. Try to avoid hot or hard foods until you regain your senses.
#2: Mild Sensitivity or Discomfort
Once the numbing effects from your procedure wear off, you may experience minor discomfort or sensitivity. While this usually goes away after a few days or weeks, it can be helpful to take prescribed or OTC pain relievers (like ibuprofen). Your gums may even feel sensitive after getting a dental crown due to irritation from the special dental cement. However, if you feel discomfort from the crown itself, you should visit your dentist right away in case they need to make adjustments.
#3: Maintaining Your Temporary Crowns
You may require a temporary crown while waiting for your permanent ones to be fabricated. To prevent damaging or dislodging it, it’s best to avoid hard or sticky foods. Try not to floss next to your temporary crown either (or at least slide it between your teeth), as lifting it out can loosen the cap.
#4: Oral Care During Recovery
After receiving your permanent crown, make sure to allow the dental cement to settle for the first 24 hours. This means avoiding sticky foods as well as chewing on the opposite side of where your restoration is. You can gradually work up to tougher meals the more confident and comfortable you get with your new crown. Most importantly, you should continue practicing good dental hygiene to maintain strong and healthy pearly whites.
These are only a few things you can expect after your dental crown treatment. By being aware of these tips, you can be sure to enjoy and preserve your new tooth for years to come!
